Il sistema FAX impiegato in onde corte utilizza prevalentemente le velocità di 60, 90, e 120 RPM (Round Per Minute), e un'indice di cooperazione di 288 e 576. Nel sistema APT la stazione invia un tono iniziale di START a 300 o 675 Hz che permette di determinare il corretto IOC (Index of Cooperation), seguito da un ciclo di impulsi sincronizzati con un 95 % di bianco e un 5 % di nero. Alla fine dell'immagine viene inviato un tono di stop a 450 Hz. La maggior parte delle stazioni in onde lunghe utilizza uno shift di 300 Hz ad eccezione della stazione DPA, che utilizza uno shift di 600 Hz. In onde corte la maggior parte delle stazioni meteorologiche che trasmettono carte in modo FAX utilizzano uno shift di 800 Hz. Normalmente le trasmissioni via FAX in onde corte sono adibite all'invio di carte del tempo ad uso meteorologico, ma è possibile ricevere anche pagine di giornale o telefoto (queste ultime ormai rarissime).

APT means that the station will send a 300 Hz or 675 Hz start tone which sets the IOC, followed by a pulsed synchronisation cycle of 95% white and 5% black. At the end of the fax picture a stop tone of 450Hz is sent. For best hardcopy quality select the lowest IOC for the screen (which results in ALL lines being displayed and thus possibly distorting the visual image) and the correct IOC for the printer. In this way the program has all the lines that are being transmitted to analyse for the print out rather than only some of them if the correct IOC was chosen to make it look visually correct. Most stations on LF use a shift of 300Hz, Fax stations on HF use 800Hz.
